Seminars & Events

Connecting scientists, sharing knowledge, and advancing biomedical research

SEMM hosts a rich program of scientific seminars and events that foster collaboration, spark new ideas, and strengthen a vibrant research culture across all affiliated institutes. These initiatives bring together PhD students, researchers, clinicians, and international experts—promoting dialogue, exposing the community to emerging fields, and supporting continuous scientific growth. Central to all activities is the active participation of both students and faculty, who help shape and enrich the SEMM scientific environment.

Support national and international
network for PhD students

SEMM is actively involved in national and international initiatives dedicated to young researchers, offering PhD students international exposure, networking opportunities and access to a wider scientific community.

  • MARIO NEGRI PhD STUDENTS MEETING

The PhD Students Meeting is an annual event at the Mario Negri Institute in Milan, created by students to foster collaboration and networking. Since its launch in 2015, it has grown from a local initiative to a national gathering, attracting young researchers, expert speakers, and sponsors. SEMM students are directly involved in the meeting organization.

  • PEZCOLLER SYMPOSIUM

The Pezcoller Symposium is a scientific convention, focused on topic at the leading edge of cancer research. The purpose is encouraging networking among the best scientists in this field and giving opportunities for young researchers to engage with them.
Great importance is given to young researchers, who are invited to submit an abstract to the Evaluation Committee for presenting it in the Poster Session.

  • International PhD Students Cancer Conference

SEMM is part of a network of 14 top cancer research institutes across Europe. The International PhD Students Cancer Conference is annually organised to by the students of the host institution and provides the opportunity for the attendees to present their work, get in contact with other PhD students working in the same field and interact with international renewed scientists invited as keynote speakers.

Next event will be held at NKI, Amsterdam, on 3-5 June 2026.

  • FEBS_IUBMB ENABLE CONFERENCE

The FEBS-IUBMB-ENABLE Conference series is a joint initiative of FEBS, IUBMB and two leading biomedical research institutes, SEMM and IRB Barcelona. Conferences are interdisciplinary,  international, three-day events organised by and for young researchers in the molecular life sciences, and bring together  participants from around the world.

Next ENABLE conference will be held at the Jagiellonian University in Kraków, Poland

The European Academy for Biomedical Science (ENABLE)

The ENABLE conference series, rebranded in 2022 FEBS-IUBMB-ENABLE conference series, is based on a successful project funded by the EU H2020 Research and Innovation Programme that included 4 leading European institutions: IRB Barcelona, CPR in Copenhagen, RadboudUMC in Nijmegen and SEMM in Milan. Since 2017, the ENABLE consortium,  has promoted international, interdisciplinary 3-day conferences organised by and for young researchers from the molecular life sciences disciplines, bringing together up to 300 participants from all over the world. Each one of these annual gatherings has been hosted by a partner research institute involved in the consortium. Since the launch of ENABLE, FEBS and IUBMB have been the main sponsors of the events, and have now joined forces to give continuity to these successful events together with two former partner institutions IRB Barcelona and SEMM.

FEBS-IUBMB-ENABLE conferences stand out because they have been organised by and for young researchers from several European institutions. The annual gatherings comprise various parts, the most significant being a scientific symposium, which seeks to explore the latest research and pioneering developments in the molecular life sciences. Coupled with this symposium, a wide range of activities focused on employment opportunities, including a career day, career workshops and a job fair, are also organised. These conferences also seek to engage the public via outreach activities especially tailored to target certain audiences. In addition to the relevance of public engagement, these activities provide an ideal training opportunity for young scientists interested in science communication.

Promotional Opportunities

Organizations interested in increasing their visibility within the biomedical community can support SEMM’s multidisciplinary events through non-profit promotional opportunities. Sponsorships are used exclusively to cover event-related costs, lower registration fees and create travel grants for young scientists, in line with SEMM’s mission to make high-quality scientific training more accessible.
