PhD Program in
Systems Medicine
The PhD in Systems Medicine trains a new generation of researchers to confront the complexity of human disease through an integrated, systems-level perspective. The program blends molecular biology, data science, and clinical research within a collaborative and forward-looking environment. Open to students from diverse backgrounds, it equips graduates to bridge disciplines, translate discoveries into innovation, and drive the future of biomedical science.
Who
We Are
Coordinated by the European School of Molecular Medicine (SEMM), the PhD program in Systems Medicine is delivered through a national partnership of seven Italian universities and eight major research institutes. Each institution contributes its own scientific strengths and distinguished faculty, spanning fields such as molecular and structural biology, genomics, computational medicine, neuroscience, and translational research.
This interconnected network provides students with access to state-of-the-art facilities, international collaborations, and multidisciplinary mentorship, creating a uniquely rich environment for scientific development and discovery.

PhD Community
At SEMM, being a PhD student means joining a vibrant community of scientists and peers. Students grow together in an international environment that fosters collaboration, networking, and interdisciplinary dialogue. Guided by Supervisors and supported by the Graduate Office, each student is part of a close, motivated and inspiring scientific network.
PhD Program Governance
The governance of the national PhD program is structured around four key bodies that ensure its effective management and strategic direction. The Strategic Committee defines the program’s strategic planning and approves regulations, it includes representatives from universities, research institutes, and the SEMM Foundation. The National Faculty Board, composed of all PhD faculty members appointed by university rectors or research institute directors, provides advisory support and meets periodically under the coordination of the PhD Coordinator. The National Academic Committee oversees the organization and implementation of activities, while the PhD Coordinator, elected by the Faculty Board, chairs these bodies and ensures coordination.
Health & Well Being
Strong science starts with well-being
A PhD is a stimulating and rewarding experience, but it can also be demanding at times. Periods of intense motivation and progress may alternate with moments of uncertainty or challenge. At SEMM, students are not expected to navigate this journey alone: a strong support network is in place to promote well-being, balance, and personal growth.
Your Supervisor is the primary point of reference for scientific guidance and professional development. In addition, the Thesis Committee (TC) provides ongoing feedback, mentorship, and support throughout the PhD, helping students reflect on progress and future directions.
Equally important is the PhD community itself. Lab mates, cohort peers, and the wider SEMM student network offer daily support, shared experience, and a sense of belonging that is central to well-being.
The SEMM Graduate Office is available to assist with administrative matters, career development, mentoring, and, when needed, mediation or guidance in navigating challenges. Students are encouraged to reach out at any time.
SEMM also supports peer representation and mentoring initiatives, which help strengthen communication between students and faculty and foster an inclusive, supportive academic environment. Connecting with more senior researchers or alumni who have successfully completed their PhD can provide valuable perspective, reassurance, and inspiration throughout the doctoral journey.
